AIMIM’s Waris Pathan Outraged by Assam Assembly’s Controversial Scrapping of Jumma Break
Controversy Over Assam Assembly’s Decision to Abolish Jumma Break
The National Spokesperson of AIMIM, Waris Pathan, has harshly criticized the Assam Assembly’s recent decision to eliminate the two-hour Jumma (Friday prayer) break for officials and MLAs. Pathan claims this move specifically targets the Muslim community, reflecting a broader anti-Muslim stance of the BJP government and Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma. He argues that such actions are unconstitutional and infringe on the Muslim community’s right to practice their religion.
"The BJP government and Chief Ministers like Himanta Biswa Sarma are clearly anti-Muslims. They hate our food habits, our clothing, our lifestyle… and now they hate our namaz," Pathan said. He further questioned why a weekly two-hour prayer break is problematic when numerous other disruptions occur in the assembly without issue.
Assam Assembly, on August 30, abolished the Jumma break, calling it a legacy of colonial rule and claiming it was necessary to increase productivity. This decision was announced a day after the assembly passed a bill rescinding the practice of qazi-registered Muslim marriages, thereby mandating that all marriages be registered with the government.
The scrapping of the Jumma break has sparked backlash from political opponents. Former Bihar Deputy Chief Minister Tejashwi Yadav criticized Sarma, comparing him to a "Chinese version of UP CM Adityanath Yogi," and accused the BJP of using Muslims as a "soft target" to gain cheap popularity. Yadav stated that the BJP’s actions serve to polarize society and attract attention from party leaders like Modi and Shah.
Waris Pathan emphasized that the Assam Assembly’s action contradicts the principles of pluralism and secularism enshrined in India’s Constitution. He questioned the BJP’s developmental agenda, suggesting that the focus on targeting the Muslim community is a tactic to divert attention from issues like unemployment. Pathan condemned the decision as a violation of religious rights and criticized Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s proclaimed commitment to inclusive development.
This development highlights ongoing tensions around religious practices and minority rights within India’s political landscape.
