Relief and Triumph: Bangladeshi Student at NIT Silchar Will Not Be Deported, Confirms Cachar SP
A Bangladeshi student enrolled at the National Institute of Technology (NIT) Silchar in Assam was repatriated to her home country after she reacted with a ‘love’ emoji to an anti-India post on social media, officials confirmed, emphasizing that this was not an instance of deportation.
Cachar Superintendent of Police Numal Mahatta clarified that the student, who liked an anti-India post, was not formally deported but was instead sent back to Bangladesh at her own request. The student had asked the NIT authorities for permission to return home temporarily, a request that was granted. She was subsequently repatriated via the Integrated Check Post (ICP) at Sutarkandi in Assam’s Karimganj district.
The student, currently in her fourth semester at the Electronic and Communication department of NIT Silchar, had engaged with a contentious social media post by Sahadat Hussain Alfi, a senior and alumnus of the same institution. Alfi had left India approximately six months prior after completing his studies.
The incident came to light amidst heightened sensitivity around social media activities and their impact on public order. The authorities acted swiftly, and the student was processed through the official channels for her return. This development is set against a backdrop of increasing scrutiny over expressions of dissent and their implications for public safety and national integrity.
