Kochi Corporation’s Bold Mosquito Control Drive: Fines Imposed to Protect Community Health
The Kochi Corporation will intensify its efforts against residents who neglect to eliminate mosquito-breeding sites within their homes and residential compounds, amid a surge in dengue cases in the city. According to T.K. Ashraf, chairperson of the corporation’s health standing committee, mosquitoes that transmit the disease lay their eggs on the sides of freshwater containers and in abandoned pots and tyres commonly found in residential areas. Despite knowing this, residents often leave these containers unattended, thereby promoting the spread of disease and risking their own health.
To address this issue, the civic body plans to impose fines of up to ₹15,000 on those who fail to manage these mosquito habitats. In addition, Accredited Social Health Activists (ASHAs) have been conducting mosquito control campaigns and educating the public on preventive measures. However, the response from residents has been inadequate, Ashraf noted.
While the health wing has been regularly conducting fogging and other mosquito control activities in public areas, Ashraf acknowledged the limitations faced by health workers in accessing private premises. He highlighted the importance of residents taking responsibility for controlling mosquito populations in their own homes and localities to help curb the spread of diseases.
Despite ongoing efforts, Ashraf emphasized the need for resident cooperation and announced that the Corporation would initiate penal measures following another round of awareness campaigns.
