Shocking Rise in Crime Against Women: Congress Urges Immediate White Paper in Assam | Heartbreaking Guwahati News
Assam Congress Criticizes BJP Government Over Women’s Safety
Guwahati: The Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) has strongly criticized the BJP-led state government for failing to ensure the safety of women and children. This rebuke follows a disturbing rape case involving a schoolgirl in Nagaon. Congress has spotlighted the state’s low conviction rates for offenders and the widespread protests demanding better protection for women. They have also called for the immediate arrest of two additional suspects in the Nagaon case.
APCC Vice-President Bobbeeta Sharma, during a press conference, demanded a comprehensive report on crimes against women in Assam from the BJP government. She highlighted a recent confession by the Chief Minister that 22 to 23 cases of rape and related crimes had been registered in the past two months alone. Sharma pointed out that the Chief Minister’s public acknowledgment of these cases amounts to an admission of the state’s failure to protect its women under BJP’s rule.
Ratul Kalita, APCC’s Social Media Chairman, supported these claims with statistics, revealing that from 2016 to February 2023, Assam registered 12,726 rape cases, averaging five cases daily. Specifically, Guwahati recorded 452 cases during this period.
Senior APCC spokesperson Barnali Phukan condemned the ongoing violence against women, citing that 23 crimes had been reported in just the last one and a half months. She drew a parallel to an incident in Kolkata, questioning whether the BJP would now demand the Assam Chief Minister’s resignation as they did in the Kolkata case.
As public outrage grows, Congress continues to press for more effective measures to ensure women’s safety, including a detailed report on crimes over the past decade and the actions taken to curb such incidents.
