Shock Departure: Beloved Delta COO Exits for New Opportunity
Delta Air Lines Faces Leadership Change Amid Recent Operational Challenges
Delta Air Lines announced that its Chief Operating Officer, Mike Spanos, will leave the company at the end of the month. CEO Ed Bastian revealed in a memo that Spanos plans to join another firm, only a year after assuming the role. Spanos’ departure follows a turbulent period for Delta, which faced significant operational disruptions due to a CrowdStrike outage in July, costing the airline approximately $500 million. Notably, Bastian mentioned that Spanos had been considering other opportunities since earlier in the summer. Delta will not be seeking a direct replacement for Spanos. Instead, John Laughter, Chief of Operations and President of Delta’s TechOps maintenance and overhaul unit, and Allison Ausband, Chief Customer Experience Officer, will report directly to Bastian. Spanos joined Delta in May 2023, previously serving as CEO of Six Flags Entertainment and holding executive roles at PepsiCo.
