Groundbreaking Update: Apple Empowers EU Users with Enhanced Browser Options and Easy App Deletion | Tech News
Apple to Update Browser Selection Process in EU Amid Regulatory Pressure
Last Updated: Aug 22, 2024 | 11:45 PM IST
Apple has announced significant changes to how users in the European Union will choose their default browsers. Starting later this year, iPhone and iPad users can select their preferred browser directly from a newly introduced "choice screen" upon first opening Safari. This development is a response to the EU’s Digital Markets Act, effective since March 7, which mandates greater flexibility in browser selection.
The updated system will present a randomized list of 12 browsers specific to the user’s country, each accompanied by short descriptions. Once a browser is chosen, it will be automatically downloaded. This initiative follows a previous update in March that faced criticism for its design, prompting the European Commission to open an investigation.
Andrew Frost Moroz, founder of Aloha browser, welcomed the change, noting that simpler selection and fewer steps will enhance the user experience and benefit third-party browsers. Apple has been in talks with the European Commission and believes these updates address regulatory concerns.
Additionally, Apple plans to introduce a dedicated section allowing users to set default apps for various functions such as messaging, phone calls, and password management. Notably, users will also gain the ability to delete certain pre-installed Apple apps like App Store, Messages, and Safari, while Settings and Phone apps will remain non-deletable.
The European Commission confirmed it will monitor the effectiveness of these changes to ensure compliance with the Digital Markets Act.
