Outrage in Kolkata: Anguished Mamata Urges PM Modi to Act on Surging Rape-Murder Incidents
Kolkata Doctor Rape-Murder Case: Supreme Court Takes Charge Amid National Uproar
The Supreme Court has intervened in the harrowing case of a trainee doctor’s rape and murder at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, instigating nationwide protests and stringent judicial scrutiny. Following suo motu cognizance, the Court mandated the CBI to submit a detailed status report on the investigation, encompassing both the crime and associated mob violence at the hospital.
During intense hearings, the Supreme Court criticized the West Bengal government’s handling of the case and questioned the Kolkata Police on procedural discrepancies, including delayed FIR registration and postmortem procedures. The CBI, now in the investigative forefront, has questioned former hospital principal Sandip Ghosh and sought permission for polygraph tests on him and other doctors.
In response to the protests led by medical professionals, the Supreme Court has established a National Task Force (NTF) to address the safety of healthcare workers, particularly women. This task force is set to receive complaints anonymously and aims to produce an interim report within three weeks and a final report within two months.
Doctors’ strikes across the country have temporarily ceased following the Supreme Court’s directive to the Union Health Ministry to ensure their safety. Leading institutions like AIIMS and Dr. RML Hospital have resumed duties but continue pushing for systemic reforms and legal safeguards.
West Bengal’s political climate has heated up with BJP leaders demanding Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s resignation and her government enhancing bonuses for civic volunteers amid the unrest. In a broader context, Trinamool Congress leaders have called for comprehensive national anti-rape legislation, underscoring the urgency with shocking statistics on daily rape occurrences.
Amidst continuous demonstrations and legal proceedings, the Supreme Court’s next hearing is set for September 5, focusing on ensuring robust measures for medical professionals’ safety and justice for the victim.
