In a significant turn of events in Assam, BJP leader Gaurav Somani has withdrawn the FIR filed against Bir Lachit Sena leader Shrinkhal Chaliha. The complaint was initially lodged at Guwahati’s Dispur Police Station following the alleged assault of a 17-year-old female arm wrestler in Sivasagar on August 13.
The FIR was filed by Somani in response to videos showing protests by around 30 organizations. The protesters condemned the assault and accused the non-Assamese businessmen, citing the incident as an affront to the local community. Somani’s complaint alleged that Chaliha incited hatred against Marwari, Bhojpuri, Bengali, and other communities in Assam while threatening to disrupt social and religious organizations.
The situation escalated when the extremist group United Liberation Front of Asom (Independent) or ULFA(I) issued a dire warning. They stated that "outsiders" would face severe repercussions if the FIR was not rescinded, which ultimately led to Somani retracting his complaint.
The Marwari community, implicated in the case, issued a public apology and performed a traditional Assamese gesture of reconciliation by serving tamul-paan. The state government announced a financial package of Rs 2 lakh to cover the injured girl’s medical expenses. Additionally, following the apology, another FIR against Chaliha at Guwahati’s Bharalumukh Police Station was also withdrawn.
In connection with the assault, Sivasagar Police have arrested two individuals. The ULFA(I) defended the right to protest against the assault as morally justified. This case underscores the volatile tension between local and non-local communities in Assam and the influence of extremist groups in regional politics.
