Tragic Loss: Esteemed Morgan Stanley International Chair Goes Missing in Heartbreaking Yacht Disaster
On August 19, 2024, a Coast Guard boat, along with Italian fireboats and a fire brigade helicopter, searched for six missing passengers following a sailboat accident near Porticello, northwestern Sicily. Among the missing is Jonathan Bloomer, chairman of Morgan Stanley International, and Clifford Chance lawyer Chris Morvillo. Bloomer, who has led the London subsidiary of the investment giant since 2016, was aboard the luxury yacht when it sank during a storm.
The storm struck the 56-meter yacht “Bayesian” at around 4 a.m. local time on Monday. The vessel, carrying 10 crew members and 12 passengers, capsized rapidly after its mast broke. Confirmed casualties include Ricardo Thomas, the ship’s cook. However, 15 individuals, including Lynch’s wife, Angela Bacares, and a British one-year-old girl and her parents, were rescued.
British tech entrepreneur Mike Lynch and his 18-year-old daughter Hannah are also among those missing. Lynch, the founder of enterprise software firm Autonomy, has been involved in a lengthy legal battle with Hewlett Packard over the alleged inflation of Autonomy’s value in an $11 billion sale. He was acquitted of fraud charges earlier this year.
Aki Hussain, CEO of Hiscox, expressed shock and sadness over the incident, noting that Bloomer’s wife, Judy, is also missing. Both Hiscox and Morgan Stanley have offered thoughts and prayers for those affected. The search and rescue efforts resumed on Tuesday as families and colleagues await further news. Sicilian regional president Renato Schifani visited a Palermo hospital, highlighting the commitment of healthcare and civil protection workers involved in the rescue.
