IMA Chief’s Heartfelt Open Letter Sparks Powerful Movement
Indian Medical Association Chief Expresses Nation’s Anguish Over Kolkata Trainee Doctor’s Tragic Death
New Delhi, Aug 18: In a heartfelt letter titled “SHE: We Failed Her in Life”, Dr. RV Asokan, the Indian Medical Association (IMA) Chief, conveyed the national sorrow and outrage over the alleged rape and murder of a trainee doctor at the state-run R G Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata. The letter, posted on social media platform X by the IMA on Sunday, captures the widespread anger and helplessness felt across the country.
Dr. Asokan articulated the grief shared by many, noting that although India did not abandon her in death, the incident has left the nation grappling with mixed emotions: “Anger, Revulsion, Frustration, Helplessness.”
The tragedy has sparked nation-wide protests from medical professionals in both public and private sectors. Dr. Asokan highlighted the victim’s poignant story, describing her relentless 36-hour duty and how she was her lower-middle-class parents’ only child. The incident has resonated deeply with the public, symbolizing a collective loss. “Every Indian family lost their daughter,” he wrote.
In his letter, Dr. Asokan praised resident doctors for being the first to protest, viewing their activism as the nation’s “only hope.” He affirmed the IMA’s commitment to its historical role as the conscience keeper of the profession and called for stronger legal protections for doctors. He criticized existing laws as inadequate and urged for reforms.
The IMA has appealed to Prime Minister Narendra Modi for intervention, advocating for a central law against violence towards healthcare professionals and for hospitals to be declared safe zones with mandatory security measures. In a significant move, the IMA also declared a nationwide withdrawal of non-emergency medical services from 6 am on August 17 to 6 am on August 18.
This tragic incident has highlighted the urgent need for systemic changes to ensure the safety and protection of medical professionals across India.
