Epic Systems Transforms Healthcare: Unlock Seamless Record Exchange with TEFCA and Experience Unmatched Connectivity
Epic Systems, a major player in health-care software, announced plans to transition its customers to a new government-endorsed medical records exchange, TEFCA, by the end of 2025. This follows the company’s involvement in developing TEFCA, which aims to establish a secure framework for patient data sharing.
Launched last December, TEFCA seeks to simplify the notoriously complex process of transferring medical records between diverse healthcare providers. Epic’s software is used by thousands of hospitals and clinics, housing data for over 280 million individuals in the U.S. Despite this, many patients have records scattered across multiple vendors, complicating data access.
Privacy laws like HIPAA add another layer of difficulty, as they require patient consent for third-party access to sensitive information. Hence, TEFCA serves to align multiple stakeholders in the healthcare sector under a unified framework, enhancing the credibility and security of data exchange.
Carequality, an interoperability network that includes Epic among its members, also announced its alignment with TEFCA. Carequality has faced scrutiny for misuse of patient data but is now updating its policies to match TEFCA’s “treatment” definition. This move is expected to reduce future conflicts and enhance secure data sharing.
Epic commended Carequality’s alignment efforts and stated it would assist customers in transitioning to TEFCA through Carequality, which currently connects over 70% of U.S. hospitals. They believe that TEFCA represents a significant opportunity to integrate the remaining healthcare providers and foster trust in data exchange networks.
Epic Systems’ commitment to TEFCA signifies a pivotal shift in the landscape of electronic health records, aiming to streamline data sharing and bolster the healthcare system’s efficiency and reliability.
