TN Embraces Change: Ambitious Government-Run Industrial Housing for Foxconn to Boost Economy
The Tamil Nadu government is set to inaugurate a groundbreaking 20-acre housing complex at Vallam Vadagal to accommodate 18,720 female workers employed by Foxconn, a major supplier to Apple’s iPhone production. This initiative, spearheaded by Chief Minister M K Stalin, is the first of its kind in India where a state government has built a hostel of this scale for a private firm, a model previously successful in China and Vietnam.
Tamil Nadu will also manage the housing complex, ensuring it operates efficiently and meets high standards of safety and hygiene. The facility, located near Chennai, features 13 ten-story blocks with a total of 24 rooms per floor, accommodating six employees per room. Essential amenities like potable water, solar energy, and advanced security systems—including 1,170 CCTV cameras—are all in place to provide a secure and comfortable environment.
The inauguration will see Foxconn Chairman Young Liu in attendance, who recently met with Prime Minister Narendra Modi to discuss the firm’s investment plans in India. The Sriperumbudur Foxconn unit currently employs around 40,000 people, with the majority coming from outside Chennai.
This development aligns with Apple’s broader strategy to establish residential accommodations for 78,000 individuals, predominantly in Tamil Nadu. Another similar facility for 18,000 workers is planned at Sriperumbudur, which Foxconn will manage.
Tamil Nadu Industries Minister T R B Rajaa emphasized the state’s innovative policy-making and commitment to increasing women’s workforce participation through such housing projects. The initiative has already attracted interest from other global companies like Taiwanese Adata Technology.
The total cost of the project stands at ₹706.5 crore, funded by loans and contributions, including ₹490 crore from the State Bank of India and ₹37.44 crore from the central government’s affordable housing scheme. Managed by the State Industries Promotion Corporation of Tamil Nadu (SIPCOT), the project also includes recreational spaces, a shopping complex, and a dining area capable of seating 4,000 people.
To further advance industrial housing, SIPCOT has created Tamil Nadu Industrial Housing Private Limited (TNIHPL) in collaboration with Tamil Nadu Infrastructure Fund Management Corporation (TNIFMC), aiming to deliver affordable, sustainable housing solutions for the state’s industrial workforce.
