PM Modi’s Powerful Plea: 140 Crore Indians Deeply Concerned for Hindu Safety in Bangladesh
New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi, during his 11th consecutive Independence Day address at Delhi’s Red Fort, voiced concerns for the safety of Hindus in Bangladesh amidst recent political turmoil. PM Modi highlighted that 140 crore Indians are anxious about the well-being of Hindus and other minorities in Bangladesh. “India will always support Bangladesh’s progress,” Modi stated, expressing hopes for rapid normalization in the neighboring country and calling for the protection of minorities there.
On August 5, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina of Bangladesh, at age 76, fled to India by helicopter as massive protests engulfed Dhaka, marking the end of her 15-year tenure, which has been marred by human rights abuse allegations. Violent unrest leading to her ouster resulted in over 450 deaths and multiple attacks on the country’s Hindu community.
Recent protests have reignited in Dhaka, with hundreds rallying against the anti-Hindu violence. The Hindu minority, constituting around 8% of Bangladesh’s population, has historically supported Hasina’s Awami League Party. The Bangladesh Hindu Buddhist Christian Unity Council reports that communal violence has affected 52 out of the 64 districts in the country since the upheaval began on August 5.
Prime Minister Modi’s address reflects India’s concerns and underscores the broader regional implications of Bangladesh’s internal strife. The Indian government remains a vigilant observer, advocating for the safety and security of minorities in Bangladesh while hoping for the restoration of peace and order.
