Meghalaya’s Education Minister Proudly Applauds State’s Stellar Education Quality Despite NEHU’s NIRF Miss
After North-Eastern Hill University (NEHU) failed to secure a spot in the top 100 of the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) rankings, Meghalaya Education Minister Rakkam A. Sangma emphasized that the quality of education in Meghalaya remains unparalleled. He attributed this to the presence of highly qualified professors and teaching faculty, asserting that the university’s commitment to high educational standards is unwavering.
Addressing reporters, Sangma acknowledged he was unaware of the specific criteria used in the rankings but admitted there is “room for improvement.” He expressed optimism that NEHU would gain momentum with the implementation of the National Education Policy (NEP). He hinted at the addition of new departments, which could enhance the university’s offerings and infrastructure.
Minister Sangma dismissed concerns that the ranking reflects poorly on NEHU’s education quality. “We are second to nobody as we have qualified professors, teachers, and teaching faculty,” he affirmed. Despite acknowledging shortcomings in facilities such as good roads, transport, and infrastructure, Sangma underscored that classroom teaching remains the university’s core strength.
When probed about measures to improve higher education in the state, Sangma assured that the relevant department is committed to enhancing academic standards. He also mentioned that a preliminary report on the education system has been submitted by the education commission, indicating that all facets of the education system will be carefully reviewed.
Overall, Sangma’s statements reflect a strong confidence in the quality of education offered by NEHU, coupled with a commitment to continuous improvement and alignment with national policies. His assurances aim to bolster trust in Meghalaya’s educational institutions despite the rankings setback.
