Enhanced Security Sparks Assurance in Upper Assam Ahead of Independence Day Celebration
Heightened Security Measures in Upper Assam as Independence Day Approaches
DIBRUGARH: In anticipation of Independence Day, security has been significantly tightened across Upper Assam to counter potential subversive activities. Despite the annual boycott call by ULFA-I, public participation in national celebrations is growing.
Comprehensive security measures are in place, including intensive night patrolling and the establishment of vehicle checkpoints in key areas. Security forces are vigilant, aiming to prevent any incidents. Constant surveillance is maintained over vital infrastructure such as oil and gas pipelines, railway networks, stations, markets, and public spaces.
In Tinsukia, authorities have set up checkpoints at all exit points for thorough vehicle inspections. Similar protocols are enforced across the region to deter criminal activities. A police official stated, “We are maintaining a round-the-clock presence at critical installations and monitoring all activities closely.”
Dibrugarh Superintendent of Police, Rakesh Reddy, affirmed the heightened security, involving 24/7 surveillance with personnel operating in three shifts. “We have deployed six commando units from Assam Police to safeguard vital installations, and joint patrols with the CRPF are ongoing,” Reddy informed.
Police efforts focus on extensive area domination and increased patrols on highways, roads, railway tracks, bridges, and river embankments. Key security targets include Bogibeel Bridge, Dibrugarh Airport, railway stations, radio stations, oil and gas terminals, transmission towers, and industrial facilities.
Meanwhile, the community is enthusiastically embracing the spirit of Independence Day. Various organizations have organized cultural programs and bike rallies to mark the occasion. However, the threat persists, with Assam Director General of Police, GP Singh, warning of a potential ULFA-I attack near the Assam-Arunachal Pradesh border before Independence Day.
The authorities are leaving no stone unturned to ensure a safe and celebratory atmosphere for Independence Day in Upper Assam.
