Explosive Tensions in Maharashtra: Political Drama Intensifies as Parties Invoke ‘Aurangzeb’ and ‘Abdali’
As Maharashtra gears up for the Legislative Assembly polls anticipated by October 2024, the political climate has become increasingly charged. Key figures are locked in a war of words, heightening tensions. In a recent rally, Uddhav Thackeray, Chief of Shiv Sena (UBT), accused the BJP of turning Ayodhya into a BJP-free Ram, and castigated Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde for capitulating to the central government. Thackeray emphasized that the upcoming elections are a battle against those hindering Maharashtra’s growth and likened his party workers to the historic ‘wagh-nakh’ weapon used by Shivaji.
Responding sharply, Maharashtra BJP President Chandrashekhar Bawankule labeled Thackeray as the leader of the “Aurangzeb Fan Club” and stated that Thackeray’s dream of a BJP-free Ram would not materialize. He also criticized Thackeray for abandoning the saffron legacy and supporting Aurangzeb’s successors, predicting it would lead to his downfall. The verbal sparring follows Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s earlier remarks branding Thackeray as part of the “Aurangzeb Fan Club” and Sharad Pawar as the “Godfather of corruption.”
Ratcheting up the tension, Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) workers recently hurled coconuts and cow dung at Thackeray’s convoy, claiming retaliation for an earlier attack on MNS Chief Raj Thackeray’s vehicle. Police have detained over 20 individuals involved in the incident.
Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Sanjay Raut, without naming individuals, claimed that outside forces enjoy watching internal conflicts among Marathis, while spokesperson Anand Dubey demanded Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis’ resignation over the law-and-order situation. The heated exchanges signal a turbulent lead-up to the elections, with parties exchanging sharp accusations and clashing over Maharashtra’s political future.
