Transformative Empowerment: Government of India Reviews Sikkim Communities for Scheduled Tribes Inclusion
The Ministry of Tribal Affairs has issued an extensive response to questions raised by Dorjee Tshering Lepcha about the inclusion of 12 left-out communities from Sikkim in the Scheduled Tribes (ST) list.
Minister of State for Tribal Affairs, Durgadas Uikey, clarified that the Government of India follows a stringent set of approved modalities for determining ST status. These modalities require comprehensive ethnographic reports and recommendations from the relevant State Government or Union Territory Administration.
The proposals must then be assessed by the Registrar General of India (RGI) and the National Commission for Scheduled Tribes (NCST) before they can advance to legislative amendments.
Currently, proposals for 11 of these communities from Sikkim have not gained support from the RGI and have been sent back to the State Government for further clarification and additional information. Only after these communities gain official inclusion in the ST list will specific welfare measures be addressed.
This response highlights the meticulous procedures and rigorous checks involved in the inclusion process, ensuring that only eligible communities are granted ST status.
