
Empowering Change: Inspiring Women Lead Drug Abuse Awareness and Skill Development in Gangtok, Sikkim
Hub Empowerment for Women in the Gangtok district recently hosted an informative awareness session at the DAC Hall, focusing on ‘Nasha Mukht Bharat,’ ‘Skill Development for Women,’ and the ‘Beti Bachao Beti Padhao’ initiative. The event was spearheaded by Manikala Gurung, Senior Welfare Officer from the Women & Child Development Department, featuring notable speakers such as Tushar Nikhare (IAS), District Collector of Gangtok, Suman Gurung, Assistant Project Officer from the skills department, High Court Advocate Gulsan Lama, and Sandeep Kumar, Assistant Collector of Gangtok DAC, along with ADC (Development) Sisum Wangchuk Bhutia.
The event witnessed a robust turnout of women from across the district. Manikala Gurung commenced the session with a warm welcome, outlining the agenda and expected outcomes.
Tushar Nikhare underscored the vital role of mothers in society, advocating for women’s education as a means to foster awareness and responsibility, thereby benefiting both families and society at large. He highlighted the pressing issue of youth drug abuse in Sikkim, stressing the collective responsibility of all individuals in tackling this societal menace.
Manikala Gurung elaborated on the ‘Beti Bachao Beti Padhao’ initiative, aimed at addressing issues such as declining Child Sex Ratio, women’s empowerment, gender equality, and the protection of girl children.
Suman Gurung emphasized the significance of skill development for both employed and unemployed women, noting the state government’s initiatives in providing training in fields like bakery, pickle making, and tailoring for uneducated women. Further, she mentioned government programs such as spa therapy training and air hostess training for educated women.
Advocate Gulsan Lama discussed the ‘Nasha Mukht Bharat’ initiative by the Ministry of Social Justice & Empowerment. He highlighted the role of women and children in combating drug abuse and detailed the stringent penalties under the Anti-Drug Act for possession of drugs.
The session concluded with a strong call to action for community involvement in these critical areas.
