Outrage as Beloved PoP Idols Banned in Karnataka Ahead of Joyous Ganesh Festival
KSPCB Imposes Ban on Plaster of Paris Ganesh Idols for Eco-Friendly Festival
Bengaluru, August 15: The Karnataka State Pollution Control Board (KSPCB) has issued a comprehensive ban on the use of plaster of Paris (PoP) idols and those painted with colours containing heavy metals for this year’s Ganesh festival, to be held on September 7. This proactive measure is aimed at ensuring the festivities are eco-friendly and reducing pollution, particularly in water bodies.
The ban encompasses the manufacture, sale, transport, installation, and immersion of PoP idols. This initiative seeks to mitigate the environmental damage often caused by the immersion of chemically treated idols. In a recent statement, KSPCB emphasized that violators will face prosecution under the Environmental Protection Act, 1986.
KSPCB has urged Bengaluru residents to adopt sustainable practices by opting for clay Ganesh idols. Unlike PoP idols, clay idols lack harmful chemicals and dissolve naturally in water, minimizing environmental harm. This shift not only safeguards water quality but also fosters sustainable community practices.
The board commended the benefits of choosing clay idols, highlighting that celebrating the Ganesh festival with environmentally friendly idols honours both tradition and the planet. This call to action encourages citizens to partake in a celebration that is both culturally and ecologically harmonious.
