Outraged Exchanged Prisoner Yashin Deplores ‘Illegal Expulsion’ from Russia
Ilya Yashin, a prominent Russian opposition activist who was released in a major prisoner exchange, held a press conference in Bonn, Germany, where he expressed his determination to continue opposing President Vladimir Putin from abroad, despite being deported against his will. The swap, the largest since the Cold War, involved exchanging eight Russians for 16 prisoners from Russian and Belarusian jails, including many dissidents. Western leaders praised the exchange, fearing for the dissidents’ lives after the death of politician Alexei Navalny in jail last year.
Yashin, who was jailed in 2022 for criticizing Putin’s invasion of Ukraine, stated he did not consent to deportation and argued that others with urgent medical needs should have been prioritized. He criticized the Kremlin for expelling him and emphasized his desire to return to Russia.
Alongside activists Vladimir Kara-Murza and Andrei Pivovarov, Yashin vowed to continue his work for Russia. Kara-Murza, previously serving a 25-year sentence, labeled Putin a “usurper and murderer” and criticized the Kremlin for the deaths of Navalny, Boris Nemtsov, and thousands of Ukrainians. He revealed the psychological torture he endured in prison, including solitary confinement and restrictions on family contact.
Kara-Murza and Yashin acknowledged the complexity of German Chancellor Olaf Scholz’s decision to release a convicted murderer to secure their safety, emphasizing it was about saving lives, not just exchanging prisoners.
The activists condemned former Russian President Dmitry Medvedev’s harsh comments about the swap and expressed their resolve to continue the fight for a free and democratic Russia.
