IOC Stands Firm: Defending Imane Khelif’s Gender Rights in Paris Olympics Amid Fiery Controversy
A women’s boxing match at the Paris Olympics ended abruptly, sparking intense debate over gender eligibility in sports. Algeria’s Imane Khelif secured victory in just 46 seconds after Italian opponent Angela Carini unexpectedly quit their 66kg bout. The sudden conclusion raised eyebrows since Khelif had previously been barred from world championships due to failed testosterone and gender eligibility tests.
The victory quickly drew criticism on social media from high-profile figures, including author J.K. Rowling and tech mogul Elon Musk, who questioned Khelif’s participation. Rowling’s pointed remarks on X (formerly Twitter) and Musk’s endorsement to support Carini brought significant attention to the issue.
In response to the mounting scrutiny, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) issued a statement defending Khelif’s eligibility. They emphasized that all athletes in the boxing tournament adhere to established regulations, including medical and passport-based gender verification.
Furthermore, the IOC disclosed that Khelif and Taiwan’s double world champion Lin Yu-ting had been “victims of a sudden and arbitrary decision” by the International Boxing Association (IBA) in 2023, which led to their disqualification from the IBA World Championships without due process.
“The IOC is saddened by the abuse that the two athletes are currently receiving,” the statement read. “Every person has the right to practice sport without discrimination.”
Criticizing the IBA’s handling of the situation, the IOC asserted that “such an approach is contrary to good governance.” The committee reaffirmed its commitment to protecting athletes’ human rights and expressed concern over the abuse directed at the involved competitors.
