Tragic Incident at Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary: Beloved Mahout Devastatingly Trampled by Elephant in Assam
A tragic incident unfolded at the Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary in Darrang district when a mahout, Kumar, met a grisly end after being trampled to death by a wild elephant. The mahout was attacked by Vikram, one of eleven elephants housed at Mayong Pahar following their rescue from flood-affected areas. The elephant reportedly became agitated and abruptly attacked Kumar while he was tending to the animal. Forest officials arrived swiftly and have since recovered Kumar’s body, which is now undergoing a post-mortem examination.
In a separate, equally devastating incident, Kamal Kalita, a 45-year-old laborer, lost his life to another wild elephant attack on the outskirts of Guwahati. This tragic encounter occurred in the Miki Para area of Deepor Beel. Kalita was killed when he crossed paths with the elephant, which attacked and trampled him. His body was discovered at the scene.
These incidents have underscored the rising human-wildlife conflicts in the region, raising concerns over safety and the need for improved measures to manage these interactions. The back-to-back fatalities have left the local community in distress, prompting forest officials and wildlife preservationists to urgently look into strategies for better coexistence between humans and elephants.
Local authorities have been called upon to take immediate action to prevent further such incidents, highlighting the necessity for more robust safety protocols in wildlife sanctuaries and conflict-prone areas. These efforts are crucial to prevent the recurrence of such tragic events and to ensure the safety of both humans and the majestic creatures of Assam.
