The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has filed a chargesheet against Lalngaihawma for his alleged involvement in a nationwide illegal arms trafficking network linked to Myanmar-based insurgent groups. The chargesheet, submitted on July 30 to the NIA Special Court in New Delhi, accuses Lalngaihawma of actively participating in an illegal arms and ammunition distribution network operating throughout Northeast India and other parts of the country.
According to an NIA press release, the case was initially registered on December 26, 2023, under various sections of the Indian Penal Code, the Arms Act, the Explosive Substances Act, and the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act. The investigation unearthed that several entities based in Mizoram were colluding in the illegal trafficking of arms, ammunition, and explosives in the northeastern region.
The agency further revealed that Lalngaihawma had established significant ties with insurgent groups in Myanmar. These connections allegedly facilitated the transfer of arms, ammunition, and explosives, which were then supplied to various insurgent and criminal factions across India. The statement added that Lalngaihawma had received substantial financial support through various channels, including associates based in Myanmar.
Moreover, the NIA disclosed that the accused had formed a nexus with licensed arms dealers to misappropriate non-prohibited bore weapons and ammunition while also trafficking in prohibited bore weapons.
The NIA has noted that further investigation into the case continues. The development is a critical step in addressing the threats posed by illegal arms trafficking and insurgent activities in the region.
