Thrilling Countdown: Europe’s JUICE Probe Set for a Monumental Earth Flyby Before Epic Journey to Jupiter
JUICE’s Earth Flyby: Key Milestone in Europe’s Mission to Jupiter
The European Space Agency’s (ESA) Jupiter Icy Moons Explorer (JUICE) is set for a crucial flyby of Earth on August 20, 2024. Launched in April 2023, JUICE is Europe’s inaugural mission to Jupiter, aimed at investigating the gas giant and its notable moons—Ganymede, Callisto, and Europa, which are believed to harbor subsurface oceans. This investigation plays a vital role in the quest to discover extraterrestrial life.
During the flyby, the spacecraft will pass within 4,200 miles (6,800 kilometers) of Earth, making it a rare opportunity to observe it. The flyby is scheduled for 5:57 p.m. Eastern Time (21:57 GMT). The maneuver will adjust JUICE’s trajectory en route to Jupiter, leveraging Earth’s gravity to conserve precious fuel.
The event is significant for testing JUICE’s instruments, especially the RIME (Radar for Icy Moon Exploration) antenna, which has had deployment and electronic noise issues. A performance check for RIME is planned within an eight-minute window on August 19.
“This maneuver requires navigating a narrow corridor at high speed,” said Ignacio Tanco, the mission’s operations manager, highlighting the precision necessary for success. Ground stations globally will be in constant communication with JUICE starting August 17 to monitor progress and adjust as needed.
Prior to Earth, JUICE will glide past the moon on August 19, expecting brief communication gaps, particularly a half-hour break when the probe is behind the moon. The spacecraft will approach Earth with its closest view over Southeast Asia and the Pacific Ocean.
Gravity assists from the moon and Earth are critical for JUICE’s journey, allowing it to use just 8,000 pounds (3,650 kilograms) of propellant, a stark reduction from the 132,000 pounds (60,000 kilograms) otherwise needed. As it nears Earth, JUICE’s cameras will capture images of our planet and the moon, which will be shared on social media.
