Heartwarming Triumph: Manipuri Woman Celebrated with Prestigious Sant Kabir Award for Masterful Silk Weaving
Imphal, Jul 29: Wahengbam Shaya, a distinguished weaver from Manipur, has earned the prestigious Sant Kabir National Award for her exceptional contributions to traditional weaving. She stands as the sole female recipient from the Northeast region this year. Hailing from Wangkei Lourembam Leikai in Imphal East district, Shaya has over four decades of experience in weaving and operates an outlet, “Leimarel Handloom,” in her locality.
In an interview with The Assam Tribune, Shaya expressed her elation at receiving her fourth award, recognizing her proficiency in three intricate silk weaving styles: “Khoi Charong,” “Sarong Fee,” and “Nga Thokpa Mayek.” These traditional designs demand meticulous craftsmanship, with each piece taking anywhere from two months to nearly a year to complete, depending on the complexity of the design. Despite her accomplishments, Shaya noted that financial constraints limit her ability to expand her production and business.
The Sant Kabir Award, established by the Ministry of Textiles, Government of India, honors weavers who have made significant contributions to preserving India’s handloom heritage. Named after the 15th-century mystic poet and saint Sant Kabir, the award promotes the continuation and dissemination of traditional weaving skills and designs. Shaya’s recognition underscores her dedication to maintaining and advancing the rich cultural heritage of Manipur’s weaving traditions.
