BBMP’s Bold Move: Transforming City Commutes with Twin Tube Tunnel Roads for Seamless North-South and East-West Connectivity
The Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) finds twin tube tunnel roads more feasible than single tube tunnels for the north-south and east-west high-density corridors in Bengaluru. According to a feasibility study by New Delhi-based M/s Althinok Consulting Engineering Inc., twin-tube tunnels could better handle traffic and safety concerns.
The BBMP reserved ₹200 crore for the initial project report under “Brand Bengaluru: Sugama Sanchara Bengaluru.” The study revealed that the twin-tube tunnels from Hebbal junction to Silk Board, a stretch of 18.5 km, are estimated to cost ₹12,690 crore, compared to ₹11,065 crore for a single tube. The per-km cost for the twin tubes stands at ₹600 crore. Total tunnel length, including additional infrastructure, will be 24.5 km.
The BBMP plans to start work soon after issuing a tender. For the east-west corridor extending from K.R. Puram to Mysuru Road, the estimated cost of a 30 km twin-tube tunnel is ₹18,000 crore. The combined cost for both corridors, totaling 54.5 km, is pegged at ₹32,700 crore.
A BBMP official clarified that while single tubes are cheaper, twin tubes are more practical for longer distances due to fewer required ramps and better traffic management. Citing international examples, the official noted Turkey’s single-tube tunnel, which spans only 600 meters, underscoring infeasibility for longer stretches like Bengaluru’s 18.5 km north-south corridor.
The design for the north-south corridor includes multiple entry and exit ramps to streamline traffic flow. Tube 1 will feature an entry ramp towards Silk Board and an exit ramp from Silk Board, with additional entry points from Chalukya Circle and K.R. Circle. Tube 2 will have exit ramps from Hebbal and Silk Board, with another exit connecting to tube 1 from Hebbal towards Dairy Circle.
The study supports the twin-tube tunnels as a safer and more efficient solution for Bengaluru’s growing traffic needs, offering a sustainable and long-term infrastructure upgrade.
