Assam CM Sarma Announces Major Victory in Land Reclamation Near Bogibeel Bridge
GUWAHATI: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has announced a significant achievement in the state government’s ongoing battle against erosion. Recently, the state managed to reclaim 80,000 bighas (equivalent to approximately 10,843 hectares) of land near the Bogibeel Bridge on the Brahmaputra River. This reclaimed land is poised to support various productive activities, significantly benefiting the local community.
The chief minister took to social media to herald this milestone, emphasizing the government’s focus on reversing erosion’s detrimental effects. "In a major milestone we have achieved recently in reversing the impact of erosion, we have been able to reclaim 80,000 bighas of land near Bogibeel which will now support various productive activities and empower the local community significantly," Sarma stated.
Over the past three years, the state’s Water Resources Department and the Mising Autonomous Council have implemented a range of anti-erosion and pro-siltation measures downstream of Bogibeel Bridge. These efforts have proven successful in reclaiming substantial tracts of land from the Brahmaputra River.
In addition to combating erosion, the Assam government has intensified efforts to eradicate encroachment on both forest and revenue lands. Sarma reported that the government has evicted encroachers and cleared 16,776 hectares of land over the past three years. This includes 9,646 hectares of forest land and 7,130 hectares of revenue land.
These achievements underscore the Assam government’s commitment to effective land management and environmental conservation. By addressing erosion and illegal settlements, the government aims to restore and enhance the region’s ecological and economic stability.
The reclamation and clearing initiatives reflect a broader strategy designed to mitigate long-standing environmental challenges and support sustainable development in Assam. With these measures in place, the state government is set to transform reclaimed lands into hubs of productivity and community empowerment.
