Relief as Flight Cancellations Ease After IT Outage, Yet Disruptions Persist
On July 19, 2024, the United Airlines terminal at LAX faced significant disruptions due to a global technology outage caused by a faulty software update from CrowdStrike, which impacted Microsoft systems globally. This outage led to widespread chaos at airports and affected various industries. As airlines worked to recover, over 2,200 flights were canceled on Saturday, with more than 1,600 of those in the U.S., and over 5,300 U.S. flights were delayed, according to FlightAware. The previous day saw over 5,000 flight cancellations worldwide, with about 3,400 in the U.S., and more than 12,000 U.S. flights delayed.
The sudden outage, comparable to severe weather disruptions, left airlines scrambling to accommodate passengers, particularly with the summer weekend ahead. United Airlines COO Toby Enqvist praised the airline’s teams for their efforts in managing the crisis and indicated that operations were nearing normalcy by Saturday. United Airlines saw a reduction in cancellations from 22% on Friday to 13% on Saturday, while Delta Air Lines canceled 25% of its Saturday flights, down from 31% the day before.
Airlines waived fare differences and fees for affected customers, but compensation for additional expenses like meals and hotels varied by airline. The U.S. Department of Transportation confirmed that customers are entitled to refunds for canceled flights if they choose not to rebook or accept vouchers. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg emphasized in a social media post that passengers should receive their refunds promptly if a flight is canceled.
