Navigating Paris: A Guide for Visitors During the 2024 Summer Olympics
During my six years living in central Paris, I experienced the city’s charms and challenges firsthand. Where Are the Parisians?
Typically, Parisians vacate the city in August, leaving many eateries and shops closed. However, this summer is different. To accommodate the 11 million visitors for the 2024 Summer Olympics, businesses will stay open, taking only a brief break between the Olympics and the Paralympic Games.
Getting Around
Parisian public transport is reliable but prone to strikes. To avoid disruptions during the Olympics, negotiations are in progress. Note that on July 26, a no-fly zone will restrict air travel during the opening ceremony. An alternative to crowded metros and closed roads is renting a Velib bike, with 20,000 scattered throughout the city. For speed, motorbike taxis are an exhilarating option, as I discovered when a mix-up required a quick trip across town.
Language and Etiquette
A bit of French goes a long way with famously brusque Parisian service staff. Simple phrases like "bonjour," "s’il vous plait," and "merci" can transform interactions. Avoid outdated terms like "garçon" to address waiters.
Dining Tips
Dining out can be pricey; opt for lunch over dinner at Michelin-starred spots for better deals. A "planche" of meats and cheeses or a "café gourmand" offer budget-friendly options. Always ask for a "carafe d’eau" for free tap water to avoid hefty bottled water charges.
Staying Cool
Air conditioning is rare in Paris. Museums are a cool refuge, as are naturally cool spots like Square du Vert-Galant and Place Saint-Michel.
Day Trips
For a reprieve from the bustling city, nearby escapes like Saint-Germain-en-Laye and Bois de Vincennes offer tranquil green spaces without requiring lengthy travel.
By keeping these tips in mind, visitors can immerse themselves in the best of what Paris has to offer during this spectacular global event.
