Support for Labourers and Small Shopkeepers
Editor,
I recently read D Bhattarcharjee’s letter on "Protectionism or Progress" in your July 17, 2024 edition and felt compelled to contribute my perspective. As a former labourer who spent long hours making bricks and working on construction sites, I deeply empathize with today’s labourers, particularly those who leave their families to work in harsh conditions. These workers are fundamental to our society, building our roads, homes, and schools under strenuous circumstances.
Beyond labourers, small shopkeepers also face daunting challenges, from managing their businesses under local regulatory pressures to ensuring their families are sustained. Their contributions to the community are invaluable, yet often overlooked.
I urge contractors and officials to treat these workers with the respect and dignity they deserve, ensuring their safety and fair working conditions. By appreciating and advocating for their welfare, we build a more inclusive and supportive community.

Need to Fund Sports Clubs
Editor,
It’s an honour that Shillong will host the prestigious Durand Cup. The efforts of the State Sports Department and the Chief Minister in promoting football are commendable. However, additional motivation and support from the state government in the form of streamlined funding to registered sports clubs are crucial. This funding will ensure that athletes can meet their needs, especially when representing the state in international events. Proper adherence to guidelines by the Sports Department will further boost this initiative, inspiring many aspiring athletes.

Bye-election Results Indicate a Mature Democracy
Editor,
The recent bye-election results in seven states indicate that India’s democracy is maturing. The BJP’s losses in Ayodhya and the Badrinath assembly seat reflect voters’ ability to distinguish between different types of elections. This trend is evident across Himachal Pradesh, West Bengal, and Punjab as well, where voters appear increasingly dissatisfied with inflation and unemployment.
These results should be a wake-up call for the current government, suggesting that focusing solely on religious slogans or dynastic politics won’t secure votes. The electorate is more discerning and seeks substantial solutions to their problems. A strong opposition is essential to hold the government accountable and ensure that issues affecting the public are addressed effectively.
