Resident loses Rs. 5 lakh in Online Share Trading Scam in Tadong

GANGTOK: A man from Daragaon, Tadong recently fell victim to an online share trading scam, losing Rs. 5.07 lakh. The victim, a novice in the stock market, was duped by a group of scammers masquerading as stock market experts on a WhatsApp group.

The victim had begun investing through the legitimate platform Groww when he was added to a WhatsApp group named "Sharekhan Club 369" without his consent on May 28. The group, comprising 200 members, featured a person going by the name "Professor Abhiram Eleswarapu" who claimed to be the CEO of BNB Paribas Group and owner of Sharekhan. Another prominent figure in the group was "Donna Anderson," who acted as the coordinator.

Donna Anderson regularly recommended the victim to purchase "quality stocks" and sent private messages with specific stock recommendations. Trusting these suggestions, the victim invested in various stocks. Subsequently, he was advised to download an app called "Pro Sharekhan" to invest in institutional stocks and was redirected to a website.

According to a police report, the victim was eventually scammed out of Rs. 5,07,014 by the perpetrators. The police have registered a case against unknown individuals under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code and the Information Technology Act.

Authorities are urging the public to exercise caution while engaging in online trading and to verify the credibility of any groups or individuals offering stock market advice.
