Fiery Clash: TMC MP Sushmita Dev Boldly Challenges Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma’s 1951 Muslim Population Assertion
All India Trinamool Congress (TMC) MP Sushmita Dev has challenged Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma’s assertion about the state’s Muslim population in 1951. Sarma had claimed that the Muslim population was 12 percent in 1951 and has now risen to 40 percent, a demographic shift he considers a “big issue” for Assam.
Sushmita Dev took to social media to counter this claim, stating that government data from 1952 shows the Muslim population was actually 25 percent in 1951. “A false statement has come to light from Assam CM from Jharkhand. According to government data in 1952, 25 per cent of the Muslim population was registered,” she posted. Dev also pointed out that the national population census has not been conducted due to the COVID-19 pandemic, questioning the origin of Sarma’s 40 percent figure. Additionally, she criticized Sarma for failing to completely seal the Indo-Bangladesh border, stating that only 78 percent has been secured.
This debate unfolded after Sarma, who is also a key figure in the BJP’s Jharkhand election campaign, emphasized the demographic changes during a party meeting. “I come from Assam and demographic change is a big issue for me. Muslim population in my state is 40 percent now, which was 12 percent in 1951. It is not a political issue for me, but a matter of life and death,” Sarma told reporters.
The controversy highlights ongoing political tensions and differing interpretations of demographic data in Assam, adding another layer to the complex socio-political landscape in the region.
