Exciting Discovery: New Plant Species Unveiled in Arunachal’s Itanagar Wildlife Sanctuary!
Researchers Unveil New Plant Species in Arunachal Pradesh’s Wildlife Sanctuaries
Researchers from the Botanical Survey of India have made a groundbreaking discovery in the Itanagar Wildlife Sanctuary, identifying a new plant species named Phlogacanthus sudhansusekharii. This species belongs to the Acanthaceae family and Phlogacanthus genus. The new species is named to honor Dr. Sudhansu Sekhar Dash, a renowned Scientist-F at the Botanical Survey of India, recognizing his significant contributions to plant and ecological research in the Indian Himalayan Region.
This remarkable discovery underscores India’s rich natural heritage and underscores the urgent need for conservation efforts to preserve its biodiversity.
In a related find from earlier in June, the Arunachal Pradesh Regional Centre of the Botanical Survey of India discovered a new plant species in the Mandala region of the West Kameng district. Named Petrocosmea arunachalense, this new find is only the second known species of the genus Petrocosmea in India and belongs to the family Gesneriaceae.
These discoveries highlight the rich biodiversity inherent to Arunachal Pradesh, a region lauded for its diverse flora. Petrocosmea arunachalense adds to the extensive list of unique plant species found in the state, emphasizing the ongoing need for conservation efforts to protect this ecologically rich area.
India’s continuing discoveries of new plant species not only enhance our understanding of the region’s flora but also stress the importance of sustainable ecological practices to ensure the protection and preservation of these irreplaceable natural assets.
