Devastating Assam Floods: Over 3.5 Lakh Lives Impacted in 11 Districts – Urgent Update
Improving Flood Situation in Assam, but Over 3.5 Lakh People Still Affected
New Delhi: The flood situation in Assam has shown signs of improvement with water levels receding in several areas. However, the deluge continues to impact over 3.5 lakh residents across 11 districts. An official bulletin reveals that major rivers, including the Brahmaputra, are still flowing above danger levels.
Currently, 3,55,400 individuals remain affected by the floods in the districts of Cachar, Dhemaji, Dhubri, Dibrugarh, Goalpara, Golaghat, Kamrup Metropolitan, Karimganj, Nagaon, Nalbari, and Sivasgar. Dhubri is the hardest-hit, with nearly 80,000 people affected, followed by Nagaon with 77,500 and Cachar with 72,000.
Earlier this week, over 4.04 lakh people in 12 districts had been impacted. The total toll from this year’s floods, lightning, and storms in Assam stands at 113, according to the Assam State Disaster Management Authority.
Approximately 13,000 people have sought refuge in 66 relief camps, with an additional 19 relief distribution centers catering to over 11,000 residents. Cropland spanning 16,673 hectares remains submerged, affecting more than 1,63,800 domestic animals and poultry.
The Brahmaputra river continues to remain above the danger mark at Dhubri, with the Disang at Nanglamuraghat and the Rukni at Dholai also exceeding safe levels. The floods have caused significant damage to embankments, homes, roads, bridges, and other infrastructure across various districts.
The bulletin did not provide further information regarding the expected timeframe for significant improvement or specific recovery plans.
The situation underscores the urgent need for comprehensive disaster management and recovery strategies to aid the affected populations and restore normalcy in the flood-stricken regions of Assam.
