Crucial Alert: CM Sarma Declares Assam’s 40% Muslim Population a Life-and-Death Crisis
Chief Minister Raises Alarm Over Rising Muslim Population in Assam
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma expressed severe concerns about the increasing Muslim population in the state, labeling it as a matter of "life and death" during a media address in Ranchi. Highlighting a demographic shift, Sarma noted that the Muslim population in Assam has surged to 40% from 12% in 1951, resulting in the loss of many districts.
"This is not a political issue for me. It is a matter of life and death," Sarma stated, signaling the gravity of the situation. Over recent weeks, Sarma has intensified his rhetoric against the Muslim community, often without explicitly mentioning it.
On July 1, Sarma indicated that criminal activities by individuals from a "particular religion" were concerning without naming any specific community. He clarified that his comments were not meant to suggest that crime is confined to any singular religion but stressed anxiety over incidents following the Lok Sabha elections.
On June 23, Sarma alleged that members of the Bangladeshi minority community had predominantly supported Congress in the elections, disregarding the developmental initiatives undertaken by the BJP-led governments at both state and central levels. He further claimed that this community holds a unique position in Assam due to its alleged involvement in communal activities.
The chief minister’s remarks have sparked a significant debate, emphasizing the critical nature of demographic changes in Assam and their potential socio-political implications.
