Arunachal Pradesh Reconstitutes Committees to Address Border Dispute with Assam
Itanagar: The Arunachal Pradesh government has reconstituted six regional committees to tackle the ongoing border standoff with Assam. This move aims to reassess the current status of their boundary dispute. According to a notification from the Home and Inter-State Border Affairs Department issued on Thursday, the Terms of Reference for these committees will remain aligned with the initial guidelines set forth on June 1, 2022.
The unresolved border issues are primarily in the Pakke Kessang, Papum Pare, Kamle, Lower Siang, Lower Dibang Valley, and Longding districts of Arunachal Pradesh. The government has appointed various ministers to lead these committees. Health and Family Welfare Minister Biyuram Wahge will chair the Pakke Kessang committee, with the district’s deputy commissioner and superintendent of police as members.
For Papum Pare district, Land Management Minister Balo Raja has been named chairman, with Rajya Sabha MP Nabam Rebia, Doimukh MLA Nabam Vivek, and Papum Pare’s DC and SP as members. Law, Legislative and Justice Minister Kento Jini will lead the Lower Siang committee, while Commerce and Industries Minister Nyato Dukam heads the Kamle district committee.
Rural Development Minister Ojing Tasing will chair the Lower Dibang Valley committee, and Agriculture Minister Gabriel D Wangsu has been appointed for Longding district.
The reconstitution follows an agreement signed by the chief ministers of Arunachal Pradesh and Assam on July 15, 2022, known as the ‘Namsai Declaration.’ This agreement, named after the meeting place, aims to reduce the number of disputed villages from 123 to 86, attempting to resolve a border issue that has persisted for decades.
Assam and Arunachal Pradesh share an 804.1 km inter-state boundary, affecting eight districts in Assam and twelve in Arunachal Pradesh, with the ongoing border row remaining a significant concern for both states.
