Guwahati: BJP State President Dismisses MLA Defection Rumours; Addresses Party Unity and Election Preparations
State BJP President Bhabesh Kalita firmly denied any rumours about sitting MLAs leaving the party. He stressed that there is no internal dissent and warned that disciplinary breaches would not be tolerated. He refrained from commenting on the potential defection of senior BJP leader Ashok Sarma from Nalbari to Congress, labeling it a personal affair.
In March, Sarma voiced discontent with the state BJP leadership and criticized the seat-sharing strategy for the Lok Sabha elections, alleging ticket denial due to party negligence and a lack of internal democracy. Sources suggest Sarma is in talks with Congress leaders and may switch allegiances soon.
Kalita reiterated the unity within the BJP, emphasizing that everyone stands united with the party and the government. As preparations for the upcoming panchayat elections ramp up, Kalita urged any dissatisfied members to discuss their concerns openly with the leadership.
Additionally, former BJP MLAs Mansing Rongpi and Binanda Kumar Saikia are also speculated to join Congress, having been marginalized by the present state BJP leadership. Rongpi, who shifted from Congress to BJP and won a by-election, was denied a ticket in the 2021 assembly polls. Similarly, Saikia had two terms as a Congress MLA before switching to BJP, winning in 2016 but not securing a ticket in 2021.
In related news, Curchorem MLA Nilesh Cabral aims to contest the 2027 polls on a BJP ticket, while Chief Minister Pramod Sawant predicts BJP will secure over 27 seats in the 2027 assembly elections, based on past performances and strategic plans for competitive constituencies.
