Heartwarming Unity: Transgender Community Courageously Supports Flood-Affected Families in Sivasagar | Guwahati News
In a heartwarming act of solidarity, members of the transgender community stepped forward to aid 40 flood-affected families housed at a temporary relief camp in Rajmai Tea Estate’s LP School, Sivasagar district, on Friday. These families were displaced due to catastrophic floods that ravaged 27 villages in the Demow Revenue Circle.
For a week, the flood-stricken families have struggled with the disaster’s aftermath, but a ray of hope came when the often-marginalized transgender community delivered essential supplies. Items provided included clothing, rice, pulses, mustard oil, sugar, potatoes, biscuits, and baby food. This gesture of compassion has garnered widespread applause and admiration.
Meena Kinnar, a senior member of the transgender community, expressed their intent to offer more but cited financial constraints. “Four of our members — Rinki, Sania, Madhavi, and I — have come from Sivasagar to offer what help we could afford. We apologize for not being able to contribute more during this crisis,” she said.
Local residents have praised the transgender community’s efforts, recognizing the crucial role of solidarity in times of crisis. Anjan Bora, a local, remarked, “The kindness and empathy shown by the transgender community are truly commendable. It’s inspiring to see different sections of society uniting to support those in need.”
The recent floods have left numerous families homeless, creating a dire need for assistance. While relief camps provide temporary shelter, resources remain insufficient to meet the basic needs of the affected families, further compounding their plight.
In related news, severe floods in Bangladesh have resulted in eight deaths and impacted over two million people, a situation exacerbated by climate change. The government is furnishing shelters and aid amid the annual monsoon.
Additionally, an inspirational initiative at St. Clarets Higher Secondary School featured a 20-year-old honesty shop teaching students about trust and integrity, a venture that has inspired other institutions to adopt similar efforts.
