Hello Meghalaya: State’s First OTT Platform Launched to Promote Local Languages and Talent
SHILLONG, July 11: Meghalaya marked a significant milestone with the launch of its first Over-The-Top (OTT) platform, Hello Meghalaya, on Thursday at the Lariti International Centre for Performing Arts and Culture. Designed to spotlight the state’s diverse linguistic heritage, the platform aims to provide a robust stage for the region’s filmmakers and musicians.
At the inauguration, Chief Minister Conrad Sangma highlighted the platform’s pivotal role in preserving and promoting Meghalaya’s languages. He stressed that Hello Meghalaya would help ensure these languages thrive by sharing local content with a global audience. Sangma deemed the platform a game-changer, offering filmmakers and musicians unprecedented opportunities to showcase their talents.
The Chief Minister also encouraged public support to enable payments to local creative talents. The platform will feature a range of content, including movies, music videos, and short films. Filmmakers can receive up to Rs. 5 lakh per film, with additional funding for nationally or internationally acclaimed works. Content creators are incentivized with Rs. 18,000 monthly for maximum uploads, plus extra funds based on viewership.
The government envisions streaming key live events on Hello Meghalaya, such as football matches, music festivals, and MGMP events, making them accessible statewide. The app is free to download and does not require subscription fees.
Tourism Minister Paul Lyngdoh announced that the Meghalaya Grassroots Music Project (MGMP) currently supports 3,000 musicians. A new collaboration with Hard Rock Cafe will enable Meghalaya-based artists to perform nationwide, with upcoming events in Chennai and other cities.
The launch event also unveiled the Meghalaya Content Creators Award 2024, recognizing talents across 14 categories. Awardees included Jr Storyteller Lyndon, Green-Tech Foundation, and Grace Marbaniang, among others.
Rakesh Joshi, Head of Events at Hard Rock Café, shared that selected Meghalaya artists would perform at events scheduled for next month in Chennai and Bangalore, underscoring the immense local talent vibrant in the state.
