Anubhav Sinha: From Bollywood’s Biggest Flop to Resilience and Success

Anubhav Sinha, the director behind 2001’s sleeper hit “Tum Bin,” has experienced both the highs and lows of Bollywood. While “Tum Bin” launched his career, Sinha faced significant challenges along the way. In 2018, he directed “Mulk,” a legal drama starring Taapsee Pannu and Rishi Kapoor that dealt with religious persecution. Despite the lack of big stars, “Mulk” turned out to be a moderate success, grossing Rs 28 crore on a Rs 19-crore budget, thanks in part to Sinha’s personal financial investment. Taapsee Pannu revealed that during the shoot, Sinha couldn’t even afford a car and had to travel by e-rickshaw while ensuring his actors had proper transportation.

Sinha’s journey hasn’t been smooth. Despite successes like “Tum Bin” and the modest performance of “Mulk,” he faced a massive setback with the 2011 sci-fi superhero film “Ra.One.” Starring Shah Rukh Khan, Arjun Rampal, and Kareena Kapoor, “Ra.One” was made on a staggering Rs 150 crore budget, making it the most expensive Indian film at the time. However, it failed to meet domestic box office expectations, earning Rs 114 crore. While it recouped its investment due to a strong overseas showing, it remained Shah Rukh Khan’s biggest box office disappointment for years.

Despite these setbacks, Sinha’s resilience led him to success with subsequent films like “Article 15” and “Thappad,” both addressing societal issues and performing well at the box office. His journey exemplifies the volatility of Bollywood but also highlights his determination and ability to bounce back from financial and professional hurdles.
